How Mozart’s Father Inspired his Musical Development

Much like a soccer dad or baseball dad, being a piano dad requires dedication, travel, and commitment. It involves maintaining an even keel and encouraging one’s child to keep trying even after difficult practices and subpar recitals. Outstanding examples of piano dads extend far into history, with perhaps the most famous being Leopold Mozart.

A respected composer and music theorist, Leopold attained a measure of fame across the Germanic world in 1755, the year before his famous son Wolfgang’s birth, with the publication of an admired treatise on instructing violin. With his wife Anna Maria, Leopold actually had seven children, though only Maria Anna (Nannerl) and his youngest son, Wolfgang, survived past their first months.

Early Musical Training and Touring

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart displayed remarkable musical ability from toddlerhood, and Leopold was in a perfect position, given his own profession, to nurture that talent. He saw to it that Wolfgang and Nannerl, four years older, received extensive training in keyboard, violin, and composition.

Later, calling his son “the miracle which God let be born in Salzburg,” Leopold arranged that the siblings start touring with him in 1762, when Wolfgang was six and Nannerl nine. They visited cities such as Vienna, Paris, London, and Munich, giving performances for the public and in royal courts. The tour lasted three years as acclaim followed the siblings wherever they went. The two thus spent much of their formative time together, separated from ordinary school.

From the father’s perspective, touring was a labor of love that was time-consuming and resource-draining. In addition to teaching violin, Leopold held duties with the ruling Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, Count Leopold Anton von Firmian, as violinist and deputy Kapellmeister.

He completely abandoned his composition and instruction to shepherd the musical growth and performance of the prodigies in his household. Starting in 1762, Leopold revised older compositions, and from 1771 until he died in 1787, he did not compose anything new. Leopold’s lengthy absences from court also meant that he was repeatedly passed up for advancement, never achieving the sought-after role as Kapellmeister.

Father-Son Collaboration and Later Tensions

Much is known about Leopold and Wolfgang’s relationship, due to voluminous correspondence between them that survives. The early years are infused with a sense of warm cooperation and mutual affection, with Wolfgang often going into detail about his travel experiences in letters to his beloved “Papa.”

On his part, Leopold took care to instill discipline, harnessing his son’s evident talents to produce mature works of art, such as symphonies and operas. Collaboration ran deep: as an example, Leopold himself transcribed Wolfgang’s earliest works, partly as a way of preventing the music from being borrowed and stolen.

Later in life, Nannerl described it thus: “[Wolfgang] often spent long periods at the clavier, picking out thirds, and his pleasure showed that they sounded good to him… When he was five years old, he was composing little pieces which he would play to his father, who would write them down.”

Wolfgang began composing his first symphony in London at age eight, with his sister assisting. This occurred in 1764, when Leopold experienced severe illness, and the children had to be extremely quiet during the rest and recovery period. This self-imposed moratorium on public appearances led them to direct their talents inwardly.

The tensions that later arose in the relationship between Wolfgang and Leopold reflected, in part, the death of the prodigy’s mother. At age 22, Wolfgang traveled with his mother, Anna Maria, to seek out employment opportunities in cities such as Paris and Mannheim. Leopold stayed behind to fulfill his Archbishop’s court’s duties, and when his wife died in Paris, he lashed out at his son, blaming him. This saddled Wolfgang with a lifetime of guilt and grief, and poisoned what had been a productive father-son relationship.
